How to open the casing of Buffalo DriveStation HD-HX10TU3, and other similar casings

I bought this particular Buffalo DriveStation HD-HX10TU3 (1TB) external HDD when USB 3.0 starts to get popular. Of course, the 1TB capacity can't simply satisfy my ever expanding BD, DVD, and CD collections. The time has come to upgrade but there is the dilemma: Should I sell this old one and buy another, or should I just buy another one straight ahead? Why not crack this thing open and replace the drive inside, and possibly get the 1TB drive out for my main system?
Problem is, I can't find any guide that is specifically made based on the very same model as I have. Luckily there are several models from Buffalo that use very similar casings as this model. I found the following two videos that are cracking open a LinkStation Live instead. Note how similar the models are.

I even found a Japanese one in the recommended videos. This similarity is the main reason why I put the title as "and other similar casings". Still, I note down the procedure that I took for reference. Be warned that this action WILL definitely void the warranty. Not a problem for me anyway.

Things you need:

  1. Slotted screwdriver, mine is 3mm wide jeweler's screwdriver
  2. Crossed screwdriver, approx. 3mm wide
  3. A needle, or a toothpick
  4. A clean table

Steps:

  1. Disconnect anything from the drive, including the power cable and any transmission cables.
  2. Put the drive on the table. Remember which side is up and which side is down.
  3. Look at the bottom of the case. There should be two labels, one on the left and of on the right. Try to feel it with your finger. There should be a small pit underneath it. Peel the label to reveal this plastic clip.

  4. Push the slotted screwdriver inside and yank slightly. Do this for both clips. The casing should now be opened a bit.

  5. See these tiny holes on the side and the top of the casing?

The holes are actually right above the clips mentioned in the second video. Use a sewing needle to push the clips through this holes while trying to yank the casing. Do this on all holes and you can eventually see the inside.

I used a toothpick instead as I can't hold the needle firmly while pushing it in.
  6. Look at the gap between the fan and the harddisk. There is one screw that ties the case, fan assembly and the harddisk frame together. If you look at the top of the case there is actually a hole for this screw. In my model, the hole is covered by a black sticker. In the above videos, they are not covered by anything. You can use a needle to pick the sticker off if needed. After that, unscrew it.

  7. Try lifting the harddisk on the front side of the case (not the side with cable adapters, the other side). When you are lifting it, unplug the fan cable from the main circuit board.
  8. Now you have the main assembly out of the casing. Notice there are several screws holding the HDD to the frame? You need to unscrew those in order to slide the HDD out.

Do NOT unscrew the wrong bolts! They have the same appearance as the ones you need to remove, but they are actually holding the frame to the board. And don't touch those on the HDD. I know you understand.
  9. Slide the HDD away from the SATA connector. It should get slide out pretty smoothly.

A Samsung harddisk. Not a brand I like...
  10. If you wish the take out the fan too, look at the first video, 0:24.
  11. After you get a new harddisk (a 3.5" one of course), you just slide it in the frame and make sure the SATA connector is in place, connected to the disk. All you have to do now is undo all the steps above. Just make sure you hear a loud "click" sound when putting the casing back together. You can try to press each side of the casing to make sure they are tight.
See you in the next post.
P.S. Chinese version will come when I am free.
